Commencement at UC Davis runs Friday to Sunday, June 11 to 13, 2027. That range comes straight from the university Registrar's master academic calendar for 2026 to 2027, which also ends the spring quarter on Thursday, June 10. Ceremonies split by college across the weekend, and your student's college sets your day and your ceremony time. The college by college schedule for 2027 posts closer to the spring, on the official UC Davis commencement pages.
I will be honest about what this weekend does to hotel rooms, because I have lived the smaller versions of it. I ride the Amtrak Capitol Corridor in, I walk my Davis weekends, and I have paid around $300 a night in this town on big event weekends. Commencement sits above every other weekend on that scale. Every graduate brings a family. Many bring grandparents, siblings, and family friends. Davis has five hotels worth your attention, and thousands of families want them for the same three nights. This guide covers the booking timeline that works, how to house a whole group, the Davis hotels ranked with one honest low note, whole home options, the overflow towns, and the logistics that make the weekend itself calmer.
Commencement at a glance
- Dates: Friday to Sunday, June 11 to 13, 2027, per the UC Davis Registrar master academic calendar. Spring quarter ends Thursday, June 10.
- How ceremonies work: UC Davis splits commencement into separate ceremonies by college across the weekend. Your student's college decides your ceremony, your day, and your start time. Graduate ceremonies follow their own schedule. Check the official UC Davis commencement pages for the 2027 assignments as they post.
- Venues: Recent spring ceremonies have used the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento for undergraduate ceremonies and the University Credit Union Center on campus for graduate ceremonies. The university had not posted 2027 venues at my October 2026 check, and the venue announcement matters for where you sleep, so watch for it.
- Guest tickets: Guests need tickets, graduates arrange them through their commencement registration, and allotments are limited. Recent undergraduate information has guaranteed up to six guest tickets per registered graduate. Digital tickets reach the graduate a few days before the ceremony in recent years, and seating has been general admission with doors opening about an hour ahead. Plan your headcount early, and confirm the 2027 rules on the official pages when they post.
- The nights that matter: Friday, June 11 and Saturday, June 12 are the hard nights. Many families add Thursday, June 10 for an early ceremony or a calmer arrival, and Sunday night for a slow goodbye.
Booking: four months ahead is the late edge
For every other Davis weekend I tell parents to book early. For commencement I give a firmer version: book in winter, and treat four months ahead as the last comfortable moment.
A timeline that works from here:
- Fall and early winter, the smart window. You are reading this months ahead, and that is your advantage. Hotels open their calendars well ahead of June. Pick your Davis rooms now, hold cancellable rates, and let the ceremony details catch up later. The room decision does not need the ceremony schedule. You need beds near Davis for that weekend, full stop.
- February, the four month mark. This is where the guide title earns its warning. Families who waited for ceremony registration news start booking in the same weeks, and Davis inventory moves fast. If you reach February without a room, book the same day you read this, in Davis if anything remains, in an overflow town if Davis has thinned out.
- Spring, slim Davis pickings. A Davis room can still surface through cancellations, and the late tactics from our sold out guide apply: check morning and evening, call the small hotels directly, hold a cancellable backup. Your main plan by spring is a good overflow room and a short drive.
- June itself, top of the range. Anything left in Davis prices at the ceiling. Run the full comparison before you grab it: rate, parking, and how your whole group gets to the ceremony on time.
The cancellable rate matters even more on this weekend than on others. Family groups change size. A grandparent decides the trip is too much, a sibling adds a partner, a ceremony time shifts which night matters most. A rate you can adjust lets the booking follow the family.
Housing a whole family group
Commencement groups run bigger than any other Davis trip, and the group shape drives the booking. Work through these decisions before you search:
- Count heads and rooms early. Write down who is truly coming, then group them: grandparents together, siblings sharing, your graduate nearby for the early mornings. Most Davis hotel rooms sleep two to four, so a six person family usually needs two or three rooms.
- Book the rooms in one pass. Davis hotels are small. Palm Court lists 27 units, Aggie Inn 33 rooms, and University Lodge 52 units per AAA. A family that books three rooms has taken a real share of a small hotel, and a family that waits finds the rooms scattered across two properties or two towns.
- Call the hotel after you book online. Ask for rooms near each other, confirm bed setups, and flag any grandparent who needs a ground floor room or minimal stairs. Small properties handle these requests personally, and commencement weekend is the wrong time to discover a mismatch.
- Put one person in charge. One booker, one confirmation folder, one group message with check in times and addresses. Groups lose more time to scattered information than to anything else on graduation weekend.
- Decide the grandparents plan with care. June in Davis runs hot, and ceremonies involve lines and waiting. Build in shade, water, and a seat strategy, and consider the livestream option UC Davis has provided in recent years for a family member who would enjoy the day more from the hotel. Check the official commencement pages for the current year details.
Whole homes: the Vrbo style option for groups
For a group of five or more, a whole home often beats three hotel rooms, and commencement is the weekend where this option earns a hard look. Booking platforms list houses and larger apartments in Davis and the nearby towns under categories like Vrbo. This guide covers the option as a category and names no specific listings, since listings change constantly.
What a whole home gives a graduation group:
- A kitchen and a common room. Graduation weekend runs on family time between events: coffee before an early ceremony, a late lunch after, a place for the graduate to land with everyone in one room.
- Room for grandparents to rest. A house lets one generation nap while another celebrates, under the same roof.
- Laundry and luggage space. Regalia, dresses, suits, and four days of clothes spread out better in a house than in a single hotel room.
What to check before you book one:
- Cancellation terms, line by line. Whole home terms vary far more than hotel terms. Know your refund dates before you pay.
- The exact location. A Davis address keeps the walkable weekend. A listing that says Davis area can sit in Woodland or West Sacramento in practice, which is fine with a car and a plan, and rough without either.
- Parking and beds, counted honestly. Confirm driveway or street parking for your cars and real beds for your headcount. Sofa beds suit a teenager cousin better than a grandparent.
- Book as early as the hotels. Good Davis houses for commencement go in the same winter window, and the best located ones go first.
Where to stay in Davis for commencement
These are the same five Davis hotels from our full hotel guide, ranked for graduation weekend.
Hyatt Place UC Davis: on campus, easiest ceremony mornings
Hyatt Place sits at 173 Old Davis Road Extension, on the UC Davis grounds near the Conference Center and across from the Mondavi Center. Rooms at Hyatt Place properties run large, which helps groups spread across two rooms, and the property lists an outdoor pool and a 24 hour fitness center. For a family that wants to wake up on campus and walk, this is the strongest base in town.
Good fit for: Families who book early, want the campus at their door, and have grandparents who do best with short walks.
Best Western Plus Palm Court Hotel: downtown dinners and a small hotel feel
Palm Court sits at 234 D Street, in the middle of downtown Davis, with Cafe Bernardo inside the property. Best Western lists suites with in room refrigerators, and AAA lists 27 units. Downtown carries graduation weekend evenings: celebration dinners, coffee, and a stroll back. A family group can fill a visible share of this small hotel, which is one more reason to book it in winter.
Good fit for: Families who want downtown as their evening base and a suite layout for part of the group.
Aggie Inn: quiet cottages for part of the group
Aggie Inn sits at 245 1st Street, at the edge of downtown, within walking distance of campus and downtown restaurants. The property is part of the Ascend Hotel Collection from Choice Hotels, has 33 rooms, and includes cottage style suites with patios, with some rooms that include kitchens per AAA. Graduation weekend is joyful and loud, and the relatives who recharge in quiet do well here.
Good fit for: Grandparents and quieter relatives, and families who want a cottage suite in the mix.
Best Western University Lodge: practical downtown rooms
University Lodge sits at 123 B Street downtown. A quick name note: the property lists today as Best Western University Lodge, and older UC Davis pages shorten it to University Lodge. AAA lists 52 units across 2 stories with exterior corridors, some rooms with kitchens, and listings include a pool and hot tub. The train station sits about 0.6 kilometers away. This is the largest of the small downtown hotels, and groups sometimes land several rooms here when the smaller picks fill.
Good fit for: Larger groups who need several practical downtown rooms under one roof.
La Quinta Inn and Suites by Wyndham Davis: last on my Davis list, honestly
Full honesty first, because this guide only works if it levels with you. La Quinta sits at 1771 Research Park Drive, off Richards Boulevard and next to Interstate 80, about 0.4 miles from the Davis Amtrak station per Kayak. The property is outdated, and it sits at the low end of the Davis hotel spectrum. I rank it last among the five Davis hotels, the same as in our other guides. On commencement weekend it still has a role: a Davis address at a lower rate, easy freeway access for drivers, and rooms that sometimes remain after the better hotels sell out. Book it with expectations set, and check its current terms as you book.
Good fit for: Drivers, budget watchers, and late bookers who need a Davis address and plan to spend their days out with family.
When Davis is full: the overflow towns for graduation weekend
Overflow is a normal commencement outcome, and groups use these towns every year. All three work best with a car. Book the backup early with a cancellable rate and keep checking Davis.
Dixon: closest, about 8 miles
Dixon sits west of Davis along Interstate 80, about 8 miles from UC Davis per Motel 6 and Expedia area guides, and its hotels cluster near the freeway. The main full service pick from our sold out guide is the Best Western Plus Dixon Davis at 1345 Commercial Way. For a group with an early ceremony, Dixon gives the shortest morning drive on this list.
Woodland: more rooms, about 12 miles north
Woodland sits north of Davis on Highway 113, and a Woodland hotel listing from Trip.com places one property 12.2 miles from UC Davis. Our sold out guide names the Best Western Shadow Inn at 584 North East Street near downtown Woodland and the Holiday Inn Express Woodland at 2070 Freeway Drive. Woodland adds its own downtown for a family dinner, and Yolobus routes 42 and 242 link Woodland and Davis as a transit backup. Check the official Yolobus timetable for commencement weekend times.
West Sacramento: the largest supply, and a venue wild card
West Sacramento sits east of Davis along Interstate 80. Mapsof lists the drive at about 12.7 miles and about 15 minutes in normal conditions, with rideshare estimates closer to 20 minutes. Our sold out guide names the Holiday Inn Express West Sacramento, Capitol Area, at 2761 Evergreen Avenue. West Sacramento and Sacramento hold the largest hotel supply near Davis, with price points that suit big groups.
One commencement specific point: recent spring undergraduate ceremonies have used the Golden 1 Center in downtown Sacramento. If 2027 follows that pattern, West Sacramento and Sacramento rooms put your family minutes from the ceremony and about 15 to 20 minutes by train or car from Davis celebrations. The venue announcement can reorder this whole overflow list, so read the official announcement before you commit to noncancellable rates.
Ceremony day logistics
A few habits carry a family through ceremony day smoothly:
- Confirm your ceremony, day, and time as soon as the schedule posts. Families have arrived on the wrong day in past years because colleges hold separate ceremonies. Check the official UC Davis commencement schedule for your college, day, and check in details, and put them in the group message the week before.
- Get the tickets handled the day they arrive. In recent years guest tickets were digital, sent to the graduate, and needed downloading or forwarding before ceremony day. Have every guest save their ticket to a phone wallet or a printed copy, since venue connectivity gets strained with a full house.
- Arrive early, dress for June. Doors have opened about an hour before recent ceremonies, seating fills on a first come basis, and Davis and Sacramento both run warm in June. Hats, water, and sunscreen for any outdoor waiting, and light layers for an air conditioned arena.
- Plan the meeting spot before the ceremony. Afterward, thousands of families pour out at once and phone service slows. Pick a landmark away from the main doors, agree on it in the morning, and let your graduate find you there.
- Keep the car plan simple. Venue parking fills and traffic stacks up around ceremony times. One car per family group where you can manage it, and a cushion of time on both ends.
Dinner reservations: book the celebration early
Graduation night dinner is the second hardest reservation of the weekend, right behind the hotel room. Downtown Davis restaurants fill completely on commencement weekend, and a group of eight needs more lead time than a table for two.
- Reserve both big nights. Book the night before the ceremony and graduation night itself, as soon as your group size settles. Plans can shrink. A reservation you release helps another family, and a group that waits gets takeout.
- Name your celebration spot early. Our family marks big Davis occasions at Latitude, my student's special spot, and places like that book out first. Let your graduate pick one meal of the weekend, and reserve it in their name so the table carries the day properly.
- Call restaurants directly for groups of seven or more. Online booking caps group sizes, and a short call often opens a large table or a set menu that the website hides.
- Build a brunch into Sunday. A slow Sunday brunch beats a rushed goodbye breakfast. Downtown cafes fill too, so reserve where reservations exist and arrive early where they do not.
Train travel for family groups
I ride the Capitol Corridor to Davis, and commencement is a weekend where the train earns its place for a whole family. The Davis station sits at 840 2nd Street downtown. Capitol Corridor lists downtown as a 2 minute walk from the station and UC Davis as a 10 minute walk, about 0.5 miles. Downtown hotels sit close to the station, so a group can arrive, walk to the hotel, and skip parking for the weekend. Our train guide has the full rundown.
Group tips from the train guide on this site:
- Book everyone's tickets together, early. Commencement weekend trains carry well, especially Friday arrivals. Our train guide lists approximate ride times from the official timetable: Sacramento to Davis about 15 to 20 minutes, Emeryville to Davis about 1 hour 30 minutes, San Jose to Davis about 2 hours 45 minutes. Check the Capitol Corridor timetable in effect for your travel dates.
- Use the staffed station. Capitol Corridor lists the Davis station as staffed, with agent hours 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily, ticket kiosks, and taxis at the station parking lot loading zone. Grandparents who want a human at a ticket window get one here.
- Pack light enough to walk. Two carry on bags and a personal item per rider under the Capitol Corridor baggage policy in our train guide, with no checked baggage service. A group that packs walkable bags can stroll to a downtown hotel. A group with heavy bags should plan the short taxi ride from the station.
- Keep the Sacramento option in mind. If the 2027 undergraduate ceremonies land at the Golden 1 Center again, the Capitol Corridor also serves Sacramento Valley Station downtown, a short walk from that arena area. A family split between a Davis hotel and Sacramento events can ride between the two in about 15 to 20 minutes.
Your commencement weekend checklist
- Book rooms in winter, four months ahead at the latest. Davis first, cancellable rates, rooms counted for the whole group. See Davis area hotels for commencement
- Add a whole home search if your group runs five or more. Compare total cost, beds, and cancellation terms against hotel rooms.
- Hold an overflow backup if Davis looks thin. Dixon first for distance, then Woodland, then West Sacramento, and keep watching Davis for cancellations.
- Watch for the 2027 ceremony announcements in spring. College, day, time, venue, and ticket rules all land there, and the venue can change where your overflow room should be.
- Reserve the celebration dinners. Both big nights, group size confirmed, one meal picked by your graduate.
- Sort tickets the week of the ceremony. Every guest saves a digital or printed copy, and the family agrees on a post ceremony meeting spot.
- Plan ceremony morning with a time cushion. Early arrival, June heat gear, one car per group where possible, or the train and a walk.
- Leave Sunday slow. Brunch, photos on campus while it is quiet, the Arboretum loop, and a long goodbye.
The short version
Commencement weekend rewards the families who start in winter. Book Davis rooms four or more months ahead with cancellable rates, house the group in hotel rooms near each other or in one whole home, and hold an overflow backup in Dixon, Woodland, or West Sacramento if Davis thins out. Watch the spring ceremony announcements, because your college, your ceremony time, and your venue shape the final plan. Reserve the dinners, sort the tickets early, and let the weekend itself be about your graduate. Four years led to these three days. The room is the errand that makes them easy.
